The University of Victoria came into being on July 1, 1963, but it had enjoyed a prior tradition as Victoria College of sixty years distinguished teaching at the university level. UVic is a great place for learning. It’s not surprising that Maclean’s magazine consistently ranks UVic as one of the top comprehensive universities in Canada. The university combines the best features of both small and large universities.
UVic delivers a wide variety of academic programs ranging from law to nursing. It offers more than 80 undergraduate and 160 graduate programs. The students at the UVic are tackling big issues and benefiting from a wide variety of support resources, like dynamic, hands on experience, research, also including one of Canada’s largest co-operative education programs.
Sustainability is a key part of the curriculum in nearly every major field at UVic, from science and engineering to social sciences and law. The Gustavson Business School makes sustainability a core component of its curriculum as well, and is home to two research centres devoted to sustainable economies and business practices. Across the board, UVic research is at the forefront of sustainability breakthroughs for changing the world. The university is a global leader in climate and ocean sciences, and sustainable energy research as well. UVic was also selected to host and lead the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), a province-wide hub for internationally leading climate change research.
The university’s campus is a vibrant community rich with Indigenous and international perspectives. It is located in the beautiful city of Victoria, on Canada’s west coast and is well connected to downtown Victoria by several major bus and bicycle routes.
