Elementary school at St. George’s

Academics with a Difference

The Centre for Learning Enrichment at St. George’s has been described as the “engine” of our school. Beyond coordinating curriculum design, the CLE develops and implements transformative original programming like CORE5, which aims to help students become more resilient in their day-to-day lives. By putting an emphasis on social and emotional learning alongside academic achievement, St. George’s students develop the skills, personal characteristics, and resources in their environment that enable them to negotiate life’s challenges.

Our CORE5 Resilience Program

Awareness

Awareness of one’s own personal characteristics as well as patterns of behavior and attitudes supports the development of healthy and meaningful lives.

Empathy

Empathy for others and acceptance of diversity are necessary for the development of constructive social behaviors and deepen one’s capacity to care for self, others, and community.

Outlook

In order to see one’s life with a constructive outlook, one must consider various perspectives as well as develop specific and beneficial attitudes, behaviours, and character traits.

Perseverance

Struggle is an essential part of learning and growth. Perseverance is necessary in order to see something through to its conclusion even in the face of pressures to do something else or give up.

Purpose

Meaning and purpose of one’s life is explored, discovered, and expressed through engagement with a world larger than oneself.

Learning to Negotiate Life’s Challenges

Even the youngest students are ready to build the skills and understanding necessary for negotiating challenge. As early as Kindergarten, our students are learning to construct the healthy relationships that support their development as social beings and by grade three St. George’s students are learning to resolve conflicts within social groups and empathize with peers. Students continue to build on these processes in successive grades throughout the Elementary School into grade six. By the completion of their Grade Six year, St. George’s students are becoming adept at using what they’ve learned in real life circumstances.

Preparing to sleep away from home can be daunting for many children; at St. George’s it is part of how students gain the confidence to become capable and independent young people. In each grade, our students participate in activities before, during, and after their overnight trips and retreats that are focused on one or more aspect of the CORE5 resilience program as well as other important lessons for everyday leadership.

High School at St. George’s

In High School at St. George’s, students live their learning. Classes are about talking, thinking, listening, doing, and putting your mind and heart into work that makes you care about doing it well. We believe that these are the essential qualities of engaged citizens of the world.

Our students take an active role in their education. They communicate daily with faculty mentors through our Advisor Program, designed to track individual student progress and social integration through High School at St. George’s. Our teachers are highly qualified, dedicated and committed to seeing each child succeed not only academically, but also socially and emotionally, to become well-adjusted and resilient young adults.
