Mill Hill School

Mill Hill School, a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18, set in 120 acres of beautiful school grounds.

We deliver a rounded education for all pupils, whatever their individual strengths and talents. We are an academically aspirational environment, where learning happens at pace, but that is only part of what we offer. The co-curriculum at Mill Hill is unrivalled in terms of breadth and excellence, and it is this, in addition to great results, that allows Millhillians to thrive in their adult lives.

The coming decades will be shaped in unknown ways by the forces of science, technology, globalisation and geopolitics. It is essential to provide young people with the technological confidence, critical faculty, social skills and open outlook to navigate a successful path by harnessing ideas and developments, by working with and relating to other people in a global arena. By developing such attributes, we aim to prepare our pupils as best we can for further study, work and the world of the future.

In practical terms, we offer a forward looking curriculum which establishes strengths in the core subjects but is also broad and flexible enough to adapt to the demands of the 21st century. We are as focused on emerging, innovative and creative subjects as we are on classic academic disciplines. Our pupils find fulfilment and success in a broad range of learning pathways: we are equally as proud of those who leave us to study Art, Design or Programming, as of those who enter centuries-old universities to read History or Natural Sciences.

Our expectations of our students are simple: engage pro-actively with your learning at School and at home, don’t be afraid to take a risk or learn from a mistake, be proud of your efforts and remember that education is a long, exciting journey with challenges and rewards all along the way.

Into the Sixth Form | Curriculum

The aims of the Sixth Form curriculum are:

  • To provide an academic curriculum which is appropriate for each pupil in its range and demands
  • To encourage and develop academic skills of increasingly independent study, research and thought
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to study beyond the curriculum, whilst taking full advantage of the breadth of opportunity on offer
  • To encourage and develop wider personal skills to allow a confident entry into higher education and to create adaptability and resilience befitting the realities of working life in the 21st century
  • To encourage pupils to consider and discuss issues relevant to them as they move towards adulthood and participation in the full range of rights and responsibilities as citizens

The process of pupils selecting the subjects they wish to study in the Sixth Form can often be a difficult one, but it is only one decision in a larger scheme that will see pupils make further decisions throughout
their higher education and future careers.

Almost all A Level subjects are now taught as two-year linear courses with terminal examinations at the end of the Upper Sixth, with a move away from external assessment at the end of the Lower Sixth. In most subjects there is now a broader and deeper Level of content, which requires a higher Level of independent study.

Universities are looking for three very good A Level grades, and in addition there should be evidence of breadth and engagement, which can be shown in a variety of ways, both academic and non-academic.

Lower Sixth Form Entry Requirements

The minimum academic requirement for entry to the Sixth Form is two GCSE passes at grade A (or grade 7 where relevant) and three at grade B (or grade 6 where relevant) plus minimum grade 5 in Mathematics and English Language or Literature. In addition to this general requirement, each subject has specific minimum entry requirements; these are listed in the curriculum guide.
