ABOUT THE SCHOOL

One of the top co-educational schools in England.

Learning at Caterham School is an exciting adventure, full of opportunities for personal development, achievement and enjoyment. We believe that all of our pupils can be successful in an environment which is caring, optimistic and encouraging.  Our results are testament to the uniquely supportive environment that is Caterham’s hallmark.

Caterham is a happy school which provides an atmosphere which supports pupils and enables their success, their development of character and wellbeing.  Our supportive environment ensures that by the time Caterhamians leave school they are intellectually curious and emotionally intelligent thinkers, eager to engage with the world around them.

The Harestone Valley, set in the Surrey Hills, provides a stunning location for the School’s extensive campus.  The School benefits from 200 acres including sports fields, woodland, high ropes course and outdoor learning centre.  Facilities matter because they enable the best teaching and learning to take place. At Caterham we benefit from inspiring Victorian architecture complimented with purpose built facilities including our science complex, a Sports Centre with indoor pool, fitness centre and double space sports hall, a new Centre for Performing Arts encompassing two theatres and a dance studio, the Maggs Library and a dedicated Digital Innovation Centre.

LOWER SCHOOL

Pupils enjoy the support of a Form Tutor who will stay with them, and their form, throughout their First and Second Year.

A pupil’s form tutor gets to know their tutees incredibly well and supports them as they settle into life at Caterham, and throughout their early years at the School. The tutor is the first and main point of contact for parents. The Form Tutor is supported by the Head of Year who will also stay with them throughout the First and Second Year.

Pupils also enjoy additional support from their Study Buddy whom they meet at least once a week. Study Buddies provide support for every aspect of the School and are a hugely successful way of building lasting friendships across the age ranges.

A great deal of effort is given to ensuring our pupils feel settled and happy at School. The early weeks and months offer many opportunities for pupils to get to know the school, make friends amongst and beyond their tutor group. Pupils will visit the annual Clubs and Activities fayre in their first few days so that they make the most of the wealth of opportunity on offer to them at Caterham.

At the end of the Second Year, pupils progress to the Third Year and join the upper section of the School.

UPPER SCHOOL

The Upper School comprises the Third, Fourth and Fifth Years at Caterham School. Pupils will stay with their Form Tutor and Head of Year throughout the Upper School thereby ensuring continuity of pastoral care and academic support.

The Third Form comprises pupils who have been at Caterham from the age of 11, plus new pupils who join the School at 13+ from many local preparatory schools. For all pupils in the Third Year, the move into the Upper School is a progression and we therefore place a great deal of importance on settling the pupils in, ensuring that they are happy and are making the most of the academic, co-curricular and sporting opportunities at Caterham.

Pupils continue to study a broad range of subjects, with an element of selection, before deciding on the GCSE courses on which they will embark fully at the beginning of the Fourth Year. Our Careers Department offers increasing support as pupils progress through the School, offering advice on Universities, courses and all aspects of a successful transition to a successful career post-school.
