Other Information: Peninsula Catholic High School is the oldest Catholic school in the Tidewater area. Originally established in 1903 as St. Vincent de Paul School for girls, it became co-educational in 1929 when the Xaverian Brothers closed their school for boys. In 1960 Bishop Russell changed the name to St. Vincent Central High School. Then, in the belief that the name should reflect all supporting parishes, the Bishop renamed it Peninsula Catholic High School in 1966. The Class of 1995 was the last to graduate from the original school site in downtown Newport News. Classes began in September 1995 at a newly constructed modern facility on Harpersville Road, Newport News. Beginning in 1903, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and the pastor of St. Vincent Parish administered the school. Since school year 1984-85, Peninsula Catholic has been under lay administration.
